My Shadowhunter Journey

Just after Christmas 2016, not too long ago, I decided a book buying spree was in order. I had a small amount of Christmas money that needed to be well spent on stocking up books on my TBR, ready for my hefty 2017 reading challenge of 55 books. I put in a few online orders, but I really wanted to get out and about and see what good post-Christmas deals the bookshops had (because supporting physical bookstores is very important!).

So I drove the short distance to the shopping centre slightly larger than the one in my home town, and after a short while, I found a gem! The Mortal Instruments series, all boxed up and wrapped in shiny plastic, the price label staring right at me. £49 reduced to £12! TWELVE POUNDS! I just could not leave it there! I had heard so much about the series, and knew of the Netflix series through my sister, and my interest had been sparked. I knew very little about the series beyond the fact that there was a group of people who hunt demons, but there was something deep inside me that wanted to know more. I’m always slightly skeptical about buying an entire series before knowing if I will like it, but if the worst came, eBay exists!

I didn’t start City of Bones straight away, as there were other books I was desperate to get to. However, once I started it, there was no tearing me away. Oh my gosh, I was hooked!! I hadn’t experienced anything like this since Harry Potter. Of course, I immediately fell for Jace Wayland (and to this day, nothing has changed!), and found the characters and the entire Shadowhunter world to be so rich and well-written.

I whizzed through the first 3 books, and thanks to a few Book-tube videos and Goodreads, I found out about The Infernal Devices. There are different ways you can read these 2 series (well, series and a trilogy), but those who had followed CassandraClare’s writing from the beginning had of course read them in publication order, whichis how I decided was the best way to proceed to get the most out of my experience with the story. So my reading order was as follows…

  • City of Bones
  • City of Ashes
  • City of Glass
  • Clockwork Angel
  • City of Fallen Angels
  • Clockwork Prince
  • City of Lost Souls
  • Clockwork Princess
  • City of Heavenly Fire

I definitely found the story flowed really well reading them this way, and recommend anyone who is thinking of reading them to read in this order. Another reason being City of Heavenly Fire contains some spoilers for The Infernal Devices trilogy!

Around about half way through City of Heavenly Fire, I decided that nothing I would see in the Shadowhunters show on Netflix would ruin the little I had left to read, so I had a few days of binge-watching Series 1 and 2A in preparation for Series 2B being released really soon! The TV show does have it’s differences, but when is an adatation of a book ever really that accurate?!

I took a bit of a break after finishing City of Heavenly Fire. I don’t consider myself much of a fantasy reader anyway, so after 9 books of the high fantasy genre, I wanted a bit of time out before moving on to more of Clare’s writing. I read Thirteen Reasons Why (by this time, the hype around the Netflix show was massive, and I wanted to see what the fuss was about!) and Fangirl, which were both fairly quick reads for me, and allowed me to return to known territory for a bit. But not for long!

By the time I had finished Fangirl, it was May 11th, and book 2 of The Dark Artifices (Clare’s 3rd Shadowhunter series) was being released on May 23rd. Had I started book 1, Lady Midnight, by then? No! I thought the size of City of Heavenly Fire was daunting, but blimey Lady Midnight was a big book! I started on May 11th, and it took me a while to get through, because reality started to catch up with me. Work, friends, family, life in general just took over and I found barely anytime to read. As the release date for Lord of Shadows drew closer, I knew I had to factor in more time for reading. I must have whizzed through the kast half of the book in about 3 days! I didn’t quite manageto finish before Lord of Shadows was released, but I was not far behind.

So this story ends in the present day. I’ve been reading Lord of Shadows for 3 days, and I’m about 150 pages in. It is already just as exciting as Lady Midnight was, and I have heard it will break my heart at the end… I look forward to it!

I hope you enjoyed this short story about how Shadowhunters came to be such a big part of my life, and if you haven’t read them already, I seriously recommended you give them a try! Oh, and maybe watch the Netflix show as well…

Until next time,

Jade 🙂

What Am I Currently Reading? – All Is Not Forgotten

Hello everybody! What Am I Currently Reading is a time when I get discuss my current read with you all. Feel free to comment your opinions on this book and how you feel about I what I have written. It is really a more in depth look at my book on the go compared with the small snippet I give in Weekly Wednesday Update.

Book I Am Currently Reading: All Is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker

26114146

I received this book from Harper Collins in exchange for an honest review at the end, and jumped at the opportunity because it sounded like such a great thriller! It’s already making out to be a great read, I’m just excited to get a bit further into it.

What I like about this book:

I really like how we are told about the trauma right at the very beginning of the story, introducing the problem of who did it early on, so we are left hanging for longer. It’s also an interesting storyline, I’m not sure I’ve read anything that really relates to it, which makes it quite a unique book.

What I dislike about this book:

The writing is slightly strange, as it is written from the point of view from someone other than the main character- a secondary character really- but it somehow gives an insight into more characters. It’s slightly difficult to read, and sometimes jumps from viewpoint to viewpoint, but it’s not a highly unlikeable feature.

My favourite character:

None of the characters have really stood out to me as of yet, apart from the narrator. I feel sympathetic for the main characters and what they are going through, but I need to get to know the characters better before I can identify a favourite.

What I think will happen at the end of the book:

Well of course we’ll find out who did ‘it’, but at the moment I have no idea who that might be, but hopefully the main character will be able to identify parts of the trauma to help catch the guy.

That’s it for today, I’m enjoying this read so far, but I didn’t want to reveal to much just in case! My review may not be up for a while because I am on holiday as of tomorrow, but I will try and update you asap!

Happy Friday and Happy Blogging!

What Am I Currently Reading? – Early One Morning

Hello everybody! What Am I Currently Reading is a time when I get discuss my current read with you all. Feel free to comment your opinions on this book and how you feel about I what I have written. Book I Am Currently Reading: Early One Morning by Virginia Baily

This is quite a steady paced book a the moment, but I’m enjoying the unique storyline; it’s different to anything I’ve read before, so I think it could turn out being quite interesting!

What I like about this book:

As I mentioned, I love the fact that I haven’t read anything like it before. Some novels can be read, and similarities can be found within genres, but I currently captured by the uniqueness of this novel! Maybe it’s because I don’t read enough historical fiction… who knows?

What I dislike about this book:

It was off to quite a slow start, and, a common but necessary complaint of mine, the chapters are too long!

My favourite character:

I haven’t really connected with any of the characters yet, but if I had to say, it would be Chiara for her strength and perseverance with Daniele and now Maria years later (trying not to give too much away!)

What I think will happen at the end of the book:

At the moment, the main question is ‘Is Daniele dead or still alive?’ but I really hope he gets reunited with his daughter!

That’s it for today, but keep an eye out for my review which will be coming soon!

What Am I Currently Reading? – A Little Life

Hello everybody! What Am I Currently Reading is a time when I get discuss my current read with you all. Feel free to comment your opinions on this book and how you feel about I what I have written. It is really a more in depth look at my book on the go compared with the small snippet I give in Weekly Wednesday Update.

Book I Am Currently Reading: A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

25334922

I don’t even know with this book! So far it has been so truthful and raw, you won’t find anything as a realistic (unless, of course, it’s a memoir!), but I just can’t tell if I’m really enjoying it! I want to keep reading, I want to find out more about the character’s lives, but it’s difficult to know whether I’m enjoying the story hen I’m reading it…!?

What I like about this book:

As I said, I love how truthful it is, Yanagihara says everything how it is and that can sometimes be very hard hitting and emotional. The writing is absolutely incredible, which I think is what has me wanting to continue reading.

What I dislike about this book:

I wouldn’t say it’s a dislikable feature for me, but the plot doesn’t seem to be following any sort of storyline, but more of a set of character studies from different marks in the four main character’s lives. It jumps backwards and forwards, and it’s sometimes difficult to tell where I am in time because there aren’t any markings to tell me so.

My favourite character:

A lot of the book has been focused on Jude so far, so I feel the most connected to him, but I’m also quite taken with Malcom, as I feel, personality wise, we are the most similar out of the four. JB also has an interesting character, and Willem has a more developed family side to his life.

What I think will happen at the end of the book:

Honestly, at the moment I don’t know, because it all seems a bit higgledy-piggledy at the moment, and doesn’t seem to be following a solid plot line, but I’m hoping that will straighten out, or I’ll just keep following the individual character’s through their lives, careers, families and relationship developments with each other until the end, which may not be a bad thing.

That’s it for today, I have a feeling this is going to be long read for me, but I’m trying to get as much reading time in as possible, so my review should be up within the next few weeks!

Happy Thursday and Happy Blogging!

What Am I Currently Reading? – The Shadow Hour

Hello everybody! What Am I Currently Reading is a time when I get discuss my current read with you all. Feel free to comment your opinions on this book and how you feel about I what I have written. It is really a more in depth look at my book on the go compared with the small snippet I give in Weekly Wednesday Update.

Book I Am Currently Reading: The Shadow Hour by Kate Riordan

28335819

It was off to a slow start but I am now HOOKED completely! I am going to finish it tonight, even if I am up until goodness knows what time! I stopped to write this post on a cliffhanger, so I’m gonna whizz through this real quick!

What I like about this book:

I really like how the story is split into two stories from different character perspectives, both of whom are family and have the same job at the same house decades apart. I find it fascinating how, as the stories progress, they intertwine and reveal more secrets that make you want to read on and on and on…

What I dislike about this book:

Sometimes it can be a little difficult to follow, especially with some characters appearing in both stories (obviously older in one than the other), and the chapters can be quite long, but that’s hardly something major to complain about!

My favourite character:

One thing about this book is the depth of all the written characters and how well each of them are thoroughly developed through the two stories! I would say I have two favourite characters, one from each story, the first being David Pembridge, who is the ultimate Mr Darcey, and the second being Agnes, who is a fairly minor but lovely woman who is still extremely well developed in personality.

What I think will happen at the end of the book:

I stopped reading just as something was about to happen, so I can certainly be led by that as to how I think this will end. As becomes apparent, not everything that Grace (one of the main storytellers) has been told by her grandmother (the other main storyteller) is true, and the ending will all be about uncovering the truth. Will the relationship between the grandmother (Harriet) and Mr Pembridge bloom? Why did she leave Fenix House? Will Grace succumb to the same fate as her grandmother? Ooh I’m so excited to find out I might burst!

That’s it for today, but keep an eye out for my review which will be coming on Monday!

Happy Thursday and Happy Blogging!
